Secretly Hiding
7/08/2008 – Australians made more than 10 million visits to the doctor last year to get help for depression, anxiety or another mental health problem.
A new report on Australia’s mental health services has found that one in every 10 GP appointments involve the management of a mental health condition, with a third concerned with depression.
Anxiety was the next most common problem, followed by sleep disturbance.
In total, 10.7 million visits were mental health-related in the 2006-07 financial year, according to the new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
In hospitals, the most common mental health-related diagnosis was schizophrenia.
Jenny Hargreaves, from the institute’s economics and health services group, said the findings match widely quoted figures showing one in five Australians experience a mental illness at some time in their lives.
“Mental illness is responsible for 13.3 per cent of the total burden of disease in Australia and so is clearly one of the most significant conditions for the nation,” Hargreaves said.
The report found that spending on state and territory mental health services increased by 5.2 per cent a year between 2001 and 2006, and now stands at $2.7 billion.
Expenditure on specialised psychiatric wards in public acute hospitals and community mental health services both rose by an average of 10 per cent a year over the period.
The number of full-time staff in mental health facilities rose by three per cent per year, while prescriptions for antidepressant and antipsychotic medication rose by one per cent annually.
Medicare-funded psychiatrist visits remained stable over the period, with considerably fewer services on offer in rural and remote areas compared with major cities.
Visits to psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists increased dramatically in November 2006, in the wake of a rebate scheme offering discounts for up to 12 visits a year.
About 165,000 Australians made 669,000 visits in the 2006-07 financial year, the report states.

Mind and Body Power Motivation Quotes – Relationships

Wanting, needing and finding that person who you can share all and not be judged by. Who shares your joy, your sorrows and anything in between, and you theirs. Most of us are constantly searching for the person who we can share our lives with, for the rest of our life. For some this is easier to find than for others.
I am privileged to come from a family where my parents have found each other for life. This year is their 40th year Anniversary! I myself, like many have not found that one person to share the rest of my life with, yet. However, each relationship I have had has been very different and has taught me something about myself and about relationships and this is invaluable experience and knowledge.
The one thing that I do know from all of my own personal experience and my professional experiences, in family and relationship counselling, is that there seems to be several common threads that we all partake in:
- our relationship is de-prioritised or put as a lower priority than other things and in some cases other people
- we believe that we do not need to work on the relationship because ‘it will just be there’. We take the other person in the relationship and the relationship for granted.
- we say either very hurtful things and believe we have the right or we stop communicating – each can end relationships.
Below are some quotes to help you start thinking about your relationships and to remind you to start focusing more on your relationship. It’s time to put your relationships on top of your priority list:
Mind and Body Power Motivational Quotes – Friends

Friends and their support is one of the most important aspects of being human. If you look at each of your friends, they are unique in who they are and so is the relationship between the two of you.
When you are undertaking a journey towards something new like a new career, lifestyle etc you need to identify the role that each of your friends play in helping you to achieve your goals. This does not mean that it has to be something big and you need to tell them everything you are going through (if you don’t want) but something so simple as a phone call, going for a walk on the weekends/during lunch hour, meeting for lunch, a coffee. Friends are there to support, debrief with, have a few laughs with and obtain another opinion/perspective on situations.
Here are a few quotes to help you remember that your friends are there for you and you can lean on them in the ways that you identify as support. Friendship is not all one sided and true friends will feel privileged that you have talked to them and asked for their support towards being healthier and happier. And may be deep down they are wanting to achieve the same thing and haven’t wanted to ‘burden’ you!!!!
Mind and Body Power Motivational Quotes – Work Balance

Searching for the elusive work-life balance, we usually believe that work is the main constant and the other aspects of our lives need to alter for us to find balance. There are a few things that we need to really ask ourselves:
- What are the 3 most important things in my life?
- What do I need for my stress levels to reduce?
- Can I work smarter rather than harder in some areas of my life and achieve better results?
There are some things that human beings need:
- security
- certainty
- love
- fulfilment
- satisfaction
Are some of the reasons you do not have balance and see work as the main constant is because it is the only entity/place where you get your main needs met?
Would your life be more fulfilling if you were able to obtain the human needs from all aspects of your life?
Restyle Your Life Launch
Mind and Body Power is launching Restyle Your Life!
Restyle Your Life has resulted from the Mind and Body Power Health and Weight Sabotage Survey. Most of the respondents reported that life balance was the most difficult factor to obtain. This factor also contributed to lack of motivation to exercise, eat healthy and be organised.
Restyle Your Life is a way to help you find new ways to find balance that is achievable and that you can fit into your existing life with minimal effort.
Restyle Your Life is a fortnightly challenge of 5 things based on – mind, relationships, nutrition and/or activity – that can easily be fitted into your life. Unlike other challenges, Restyle Your Life challenges are things that you can fit into your existing life to help you gain better life, health, family and work balance.
Gradual changes reduces anxiety, overwhelm and the need to return to comfort zones. It is easier to develop new habits with greater ease if they fit into your current lifestyle rather than changing your lifestyle to fit around new habits. Eventually, this will lead to leading a healthier, happier and more balanced lifestyle.
We want to develop a community of people who are undertaking the same challenges, supporting and encouraging each other.
The more support you have the more successful you are going to be. Invite your friends, family, FB friends, work colleagues to join the challenge with you.
I will be helping you with resources to keep you on track, support, advice and webinars.
